The author of the article focuses his attention on latent (implicit) ethnicity paradox, essence which lies in fact that ancient phenomenon has not yet been articulated and reflected social level. But definite ethnic groups ethnicities did really exist. In pre-modern period articulation was realized either a personality level or family societal one. specificity Ukrainian case nation considered itself to be separate from neighbours this approach originated Southern area Eastern Slavs early Middle Ages when tribe names disappeared. Since then, Kyivan Rus’ group is initial form community came into existence. course time its ethno-cultural, ethno-social ethno-national strata were transformed.
